HOWTOs in DocBook SGML?:
Îɤ¤µ»½Ñʸ½ñ¤Î¤ª¼êËܤȤ·¤Æ
Leblanc ¤µ¤ó:
Personally, I think that one of the best people to take after would be
Asimov. His text books and other non-fiction works are loads of fun to
read, and easy to understand. Isn't that the point of documentation?
Murphy ¤µ¤ó:
Seriously, though, you are absolutely right and thus the discussion
on writing guides truly belongs in the HOWTO-HOWTO. So far, we have
collected
1) George Orwell's guide (free, online and totally useful)
2) Strunk and White (small, cheap and essential)
3) Hart's guide sadly out of print, even after being
revised for electronic media.
IMHO, we could do more to improve the quality of our docs by requiring
these works as pre-requisites than we could from any amount of
technology.
Hmmm ... hey, let's start a contest: Linux Technical Haiku!
Jeff Waugh ¤µ¤ó:
DocBook is easy
when you read the manual
Norman Walsh writes well
where is ip_masq?
compile my kernel again
we have network love
every year Rusty
renames netfilter we must
change our firewall scripts
Linus calls the shots
Alan keeps it working well
Telsa makes us smile
devfs was blessed
by the holy penguin pee
Richard Gooch could rest
SGML is
confusing for some writers
call it XML

XDM and X Terminal mini howto ... ?:
Kevin Taylor ¤µ¤ó:
I have been experimenting with using 486 PCs as
X terminals - but have found no one summary
document about using XDM and X terminals ...
I have seen the thin-client howto, the X users
howto, and read the XDM and X man pages.
Eventually I sorted things out, with the help
of the Xserver man page (when I found it) and
misc articles from the web (LG, etc).
Basically, what I am coming round to, is I now
have some summary notes on XDM and X terminals
(in HTML at the mo) and was wondering about
submitting them as a mini-howto.

Proposed new HOWTO - Lotus Domino:
Alan Bell ¤µ¤ó:
I am an experienced Lotus Domino Programmer/Administrator and an Advanced
Lotus Business Partner but fairly new to the wonderful world of Linux, I
have set up Lotus Domino server on a few computers with a variety of linux
distributions and I feel a HOWTO in this area would be of assistance to
the Lotus and Linux community. I would be happy to write and maintain a
HOWTO covering the installation and configuration of Lotus Domino server
and the Lotus Notes client running under Wine. (Lotus Notes client under
Wine is now very impressive.)

I am part of the Qmail mailing list and have just finished a project which
some people say should have a HOWTO written for it. Now I am curious if you

Some documentation of the LDP is not

Uwe Boheme uwe@bnhof.de
* NEW entry
Describes how to setup a bridge with the recent kernel patches and brctl
utility by Lennert Buytenhek. With developer kernel 2.3.47 the new
bridging code is part of the mainstream. On 20.06.2000 there are patches
for stable kernels 2.2.14 and 2.2.15. What happens if a penguin
crosses a bridge?
(note: had problems producing PDF and PostScript, hence those variants
do not exist on the LDP/metalab site for this document)

IMO, "yes". The existing tools work just fine and can generate all
acceptable formats/variants. The DTD is acceptable albeit sparse.
I think it would be ridiculous to turn away new or updated content
just because the SGML is not DocBook.

Make them subsubsections.
So if 5.2 is about OpenLDAP then 5.2.1 would be using plain source files

Then someone can send in some info to make 5.2.3 which is about Debian.
(Just an example of how I would do it.)

Commercial Environment Linux Howto:
Alistair Mann ¤µ¤ó:
I've been working on some documentation under the provisional name "Getting
Linux into the Commercial Environment HOWTO" which aims to address the more
abstract issues presented to netadmins and sysadmins. I'm focusing much less
on the technical details of being an admin (the NAG and Aeleen Frisch's SAG
have thoroughly covered this field) and far more on the technical logistics
of rolling Linux out (after which NAG and SAG takes over) and the internal
politics of such a move.
Gjoen ¤µ¤ó¤«¤é:
OK, so it is the time for another entry to the Linux Weekly News. A
draft is ready for your perusal at
http://www.nyx.net/~sgjoen/lwn2_3.html
Next issue is out this Thursday and we won't make that deadline.
Instead I hope we can get this in for next week, sos bring me all
your feedback.

- Linux IP Masquerade HOWTO
David Ranch, dranch@trinnet.net
v1.90, July 03, 2000
* updated
On request from the author...Changes from 1.85 to 1.90 - 07/03/00
- Updated the URL for TrinityOS to reflect its new layout
- Caught a typo in the IPCHAINS rulesets where I was setting "ip_ip_always_defrag" instead of "ip_always_defrag"
- The URL to Taro Fukunaga was invaild since it was using "mail:" instead of "mailto:"
- Added some clarification to the "Masqing multiple internal interfaces" where
some people didn't understand why eth0 was referenced multiple times.
- Fixed another "space after the EXTIP variable" bug in the stronger IPCHAINS section. I guess I missed one.
- In Test #7 of Section 5, I referred users to go back to step #4. Thats should
have been step #6.
LIUpdated the kernel versions that came with SuSe 5.2 and 6.0
- Fixed a typo (or vs. of) in Section 7.2
- Added Item #9 to the Testing MASQ section to refer users who are still haing
MASQ problems to read the MTU entry in the FAQ
- Improved the itemization in Section 5
- Updated the IPCHAINS syntax to show the MASQ/FORWARD table. Before, it was
valid to run "ipchains -F -L" but now only "ipchains -M -L" works.
- Updated the LooseUDP documentation to reflect the new LooseUDP behavior in
2.2.16+ kernels. Before, it was always enabled, now, it defaults to OFF
due to
a possible MASQed UDP port scanning vunerability. I have updated the BASIC
and
SEMI-STRONG IPCHAINS rulesets to reflect this option.
- Updated the recommended 2.2.x kernel to be 2.2.16+ since there is a TCP root
exploit vunerability in all lesser versions.
- Added Redhat 6.2 to the MASQ supported list
- Updated the link for Sonny Parlin's FWCONFIG to now point to fBuilder.
- Updated the various example IP addresses from 111.222.333.444 to be 111.222.121.212 to be within a valid IP address range
- Updated the URL for the BETA H.323 MASQ module
- Finally updated the MTU FAQ section to help out PPPoE DSL and Cablemodem users. LI Basically, the MTU-issues section now reflects that users can
also
change the MTU settings of all of their INTERNAL machines to solve the
dreaded
MASQ MTU issue.
- Added a clarification to the PORTFW section that PORTFWed connections that
work for EXTERNAL clients will not work for INTERNAL clients. If you also
need
INTERNAL portfw, you will need to also impliment the REDIR tool as well. I
also
noted that this issue is fixed in the 2.4.x kernels with Netfilter.
- I also added a technical explination from Juanjo to the end of the PORTFW
section to why this senario doesn't work properly.
- Updated all of the IPCHAINS URLs to point to Paul Rusty's new site at
http://netfilter.filewatcher.org/ipchains/
- Updated Paul Rustys email address
- Added a new FAQ section for users whose connections remain idle for a long
time and their PORTFWed connection no longer work.
- Updated all the URLs to the LDP that pointed to metalab.unc.edu to the new
site of linuxdoc.org
- Updated the Netfilter URLs to point to renamed HOWTOs, etc.
- I also updated the status of the 2.4.x support to note that I *will* add full
Netfilter support to this HOWTO and if the time comes, then split that
support
off into a different HOWTO.
- Updated the 2.4.x Requirements section to reflect how NetFilter has changed
compared to IPFWADM and IPCHAINS and gave a PROs/CONs list of new features
and
changes to old behaviors.
- Added a TCP/IP math example to the "My MASQ connection is slow" FAQ entry to
better explain what a user should expect performance wise.
- Updated the HOWTO to reflect that newer versions of the "pump" DHCP client
now can run scripts upon bringup, lease renew, etc.
- Updated the PORTFWing of FTP to reflect that several users say they can successfully forward FTP traffic to internal machines without the need of
a
special ip_masq_ftp module. I have made the HOWTO reflect that users
should try
it without the modified module first and then move to the patch if
required.

Basically, for a unified documentation browser/search
engine, we need a standard.
My idea would be putting the following hierarchy in a
dir, for ex /opt/doc :
lang/jp/html
lang/jp/pdf
lang/de (etc)
html/
pdf/
pdb/
txt/
info/
man/
(...)
We could just provide link for dirs (for ex,
/usr/man/man1 to man/man1) or for files (for ex
/usr/doc/XXXX in txt/XXXX) or put plain files in that
dir, as you suggested.

Don't _turn_ geek, just add it. Poetry is not just 'experience' you've
gained, but an essential skill, and no need to dump it or apologize for
it. Both Bucky Fuller and Marshall McLuhan said the future belongs to
the artist-scientist ... and I bet you may be surprised to find out
just how many of us fit this description.

Everyone seems to agree to use DocBook, very well. However, in the
opinion of the author himself, the jadetex processing tool is not suited
for professional books.
I am personally not really happy with jadetex and some others too I
know.
Do the other people here use it?
Are you happy with it?
Do you use something else?
Did you think in developing something else?

Aznar ¤µ¤ó¤Î¤Þ¤È¤á:
The LDP currently uses its own set of tools, the linuxdoctools
(the former sgmltools1) since docbook is not considered ready to use.
It's easier to add what we want in working tools (sgml2pdf, sgml2rpm for
ex) than waiting on docbook to be usable by each of our authors.
However, we have a team working on the docbook integration within the
LDP (docbooktools), and we provide docbook output from the current
linuxdoctools documents.
In the future, when docbook will be considered ready for production use
we will support both linuxdoctools and docbooktools, after which all our
documents will be in docbook.
Docbook documents are already accepted, but they are separated from the
linuxdoc HOWTOs.

Future of jadetex:
¾åµ¤Î³¤¡£Camille ¤µ¤ó¤Î¤Þ¤È¤á:
states:
1) currently, DocBook -> professional print is not convenient
2) the base of a possible new tool should be XML and no more SGML
3) the new tool must handle many languages specificities correctly
4) none of the current free' processing tools meet the above points or
even took incompatible directions.
4) LaTeX gives professional prints for *many* languages and uses free'
tools
proposal:
1) Define the mean to pass from DocBook to LaTeX:
- perl/Python
- DSSSL
- XSL
- ...
2) Solve the stylesheets problem (depends on point 1)
- use current .dsl ones
- use LaTeX .sty ones
- develop a [dsl2xsl, dsl2sty] script?
